Jobs, Potions, and Comedy

Roundup

Just a short roundup today. Ryan’s out of town being a brand new uncle, so it’s just me all by my lonesome with videos to shoot and songs to write. Still, some deep stuff for thinking about player characters and the way we play games. And something funny.

Get a Job!

I normally don’t like to include two articles from the same source in the same week, but this one was just too good to pass up. It came up as the Dungeon’s Master Friday favourite yesterday. The job that a PC had or still has can shape who they are and how they adventure. Where they a blacksmith? A cooper? A bard? What did they want to be when they grew up? All this and more at Dungeon’s Master.

Thoughts on Rules Heavy Rpgs

Zachary Houghton at RPG Blog II discusses the merits of crunchy systems like Rolemaster and ┬áRifts in a world where games seem t be tending toward rules-light play. For me it’s all time-based. For a one-shot session, rules light is the way to go, but for an extended campaign, I’ve gotta have that crunch. It helps he get into the nitty-gritty. You can read his view on the matter at RPG Blog II.

Make Potions Fun

This gives me the shivers and makes me want to do a magic item month. Soon, soooon. Anyway, Derek over at Dungeon’s Master remembers when magic items were mysterious, and none were so mysterious and dangerous as an unlabelled potion. Brew up some fun and check out his post with 6 tips on how to make potions more interesting.

Nights at the Round Table

A new tabletop comedy from Redshirt Films. I’m intrigued by its hilarity. Check out the pilot below.
